The world is a fascinating place,
The human brain ingenious enough to ace
Any scientific or technical test,
For god truly did make everything the best.
We can figure out the solution to any math problem,
Yet it harries me to see that there are so many social issues
And we do nothing to solve ‘em.
The brain that was clever enough
To have figured out a way to go into outer space
Can’t see that everyone is equal,
Doesn’t allow everyone to showcase
Their talent and strengths
Because only men can run long lengths,
And only women can cook,
But they’re not smart enough to read a book.

Religion is a thing,
Only the rich can be king,
And before she can stand on her feet,
A girl is made to wear a ring.
Stones and statues are worshipped,
And kind people are stripped
Of their wealth and honest drive,
While the dishonest thrive.

It bothers me to see
The very same ingenious brain
Not even once refrain,
Never think in the least bit
Before being an inhuman git.
Is this the same free world that God gave us so kindly?
Unfortunately, this is the neglected truth
That neither the old nor the youth
Do anything to change.
The world asks us for only one plight,
Before we perform any rite,
Or let anyone sink,
Let’s just think.
This is a poem that I wrote last year, on being assigned the task to write a poem about ‘Whatever Fascinates or Bothers Me the Most’ by my English teacher. Although this wasn’t the very first poem that I wrote, it did help build a certain fondness for poetry in me. Writing this poem made me realise the true power of poetry—how despite not having any particular rules to be followed, it can have a deeper impact than even a deeply descriptive essay. Since then, I have somehow always found it easier to express my feelings through poetry, especially when I have a particularly strong passion towards the topic that I’m writing about. Although it took some time to grow on me, I feel quite proud of this poem. I hope you enjoyed reading it, and are inspired in some way to do some good in this world.
Also, if you agreed to even one little thing that I wrote in this poem, I would really appreciate you taking out no more than a minute from your schedule to go to the HeForShe website and commit to gender equality. This is not sponsored in any way, I just really like the cause and want to contribute to and support it in whatever little way I can.
Thank you for reading!
